Friday, September 20 – the date of the fundraising auction of 9 by 5 inch artworks at Edith Cowan University (ECU) – was fast approaching. But, someone’s work was conspicuous in its absence. The Art Partners team had nine completed 9 by 5s to offer up for auction, but there wasn’t a work by Daniel Marinovich.
It was clear that the Art Partners auction experience would be richer with Daniel – a socially engaging and curious soul – in the mix. He hadn’t been part of the 9 by 5 mini-workshop at Helen Seiver’s in July. Thus, Rocheen Navarro was invited to facilitate a few sessions for Daniel so that he could produce some exhibition-ready work, including a 9 by 5.
Daniel isn’t altogether unfamiliar with witnessing his artwork being auctioned. Back in 2012, he was in Melbourne for the Rob McNamara Exhibition. Over breakfast in a café, airplanes were the topic of discussion. Helen Seiver laid out a few serviettes and pulled out a black marker from her handbag. She invited Daniel to draw the airplane that the Art Partners quartet had flown on from Perth. Daniel produced a bold, black and white contour drawing that Helen photographed in situ. Prints were then developed and framed. One was exhibited that year in the As We Are Exhibition in Perth. Another was exhibited as part of Papergirl at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries (BRAG). Daniel generously donated the framed print of Daniel’s Airplane to an auction to raise funds for the Front Room Gallery that had hosted the BRAG exhibition. He attended the auction and witnessed Daniel’s Airplane attract the highest bid of the evening!
That’s why Art Partners wanted and needed Daniel in the 9 by 5 mix. It’s almost as if the Art Partners contribution to the auction wouldn’t be complete without him. His energy and the goodness that he attracts are, quite simply, enriching.
The Sky Beneath My Wings
Thus, after two mini-workshops hosted by Rocheen at The Red Mill Store Studio Gallery, Daniel completed The Sky Beneath My Wings. The first workshop began with Rocheen proposing that Daniel draw some contours on paper with charcoal. Daniel chose to draw a tree with pods.
Rocheen then showed Daniel how to transfer a section of his charcoal drawing on to the treated surface of the 9 by 5.
Over the course of the two workshops, Daniel experimented with a variety of techniques and colours which resulted in his completed work.
Daniel, never one to shy away from a social experience, plans to attend the auction at ECU. He’ll make the experience more fulfilling for anyone who has the good fortune to meet him.
