9 x 5 Artwork Creation 2016

This year, as in past years, artists are invited to create a 9 x 5 inch artwork to be auctioned off on Sunday, August 28 (University Open Day) at Edith Cowan University (ECU), Bunbury Campus. The auction is the major annual fundraising event for the Art Partners program.

What are 9 x 5s?

The 9 x 5 legacy began in 1889 when several artists of the Heidelberg School held a 9 x 5 Impressionist Exhibition at the Melbourne Town Hall. Most of the 183 works included in the exhibition were painted on 9 x 5 inch cigar-box panels scrounged from local tobacconists.

What media do I use?

The choice is up to you. Artworks auctioned in previous years have included oils, acrylics, prints, collages and relief sculptures.

Where do I get my blank 9 x 5?

Your blank 9 x 5 (composite board) can be collected from one of these locations:

ECU, Bunbury Campus, Building 9 (art studio)
Jacksons Drawing Supplies, Bunbury and Busselton
Bunbury Regional Art Galleries
ArtGeo Cultural Complex, Busselton

If you would like one delivered to you, please email us here.

How many 9 x 5 artworks can I donate?

New this year is that we are asking each artist to donate only one work. This will help ensure that we have an appropriate number of artworks for auction.  If you are committed to donating more than one, we just ask that your work be a diptych or a triptych so that your beautiful artworks can be auctioned as one lot.

What if I need some inspiration?

Perhaps check out the ECU workshop series that is being offered this year. You won’t necessarily be creating a 9 x 5 at the workshop, but you might arm yourself with some amazing ideas.

Where do I return my 9 x 5 masterpiece?

You can return it to one of the above locations by July 18.

What will happen to my masterpiece?

It will be exhibited along the Wall of the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries from July 25 to August 14. It will then be carefully transported to ECU, Bunbury Campus where it will be auctioned.

When and where is the auction and can I come?

The auction is on Sunday, August 28 in building 6.101 of the ECU Bunbury Campus beginning at 2:30 p.m. The auction is a public event, and all are welcome.

Will I be acknowledged for my contribution?

Absolutely! If your panel is received by July 18, your name will be listed on an A3 panel that accompanies the exhibition at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.  Also, your name and a photograph of your panel will appear on a giant screen at the auction.
