Back in 2012, artist Roslyn Burns is on the record as having said ‘I just want people to back me.’
Well, between then and now, Roslyn has truly backed herself! With funding from a Community Living and Participation Grant (funded by Lotterywest and National Disability Services), Roslyn had the opportunity to work with three professional artists from the South West: Amanda Doust, Anastasija Komarnyckyj and Marina Troitsky. Artistic direction for Roslyn’s project, and curation for Backing Myself, were provided by artist Helen Seiver.
Over the course of 18 sessions at three different venues, Roslyn had the opportunity to extend herself by exploring a whole new world of arts experience, materials and techniques. She painted outdoors and in the artists’ studios; she worked in Bunbury and in Chapman Hill; she created her largest work ever; and, she employed a host of new tools and techniques giving her more control of her artistic practice.
Roslyn has overcome extraordinary obstacles in her life. This solo exhibition celebrates her fierce determination to express herself through her art.
